Seminars/Lectures |
Some years ago, the charming man in the photograph proved
true that the line between talking in front of people
for their benefit and yelling at them for unidentified
reasons is one which any speaker in a position to shape
the minds of his listeners must be careful not to cross.
One needn’t be a seasoned lecturer to know that
there is one particular element which secures a successful
lecture and which, if omitted, leads to preaching and
to paralysing monologues. Irrespective of style, approach
of delivery, methodology and scope it is this one purpose
which must always be prioritised in the mind of the
lecturer; namely the desire to deeply inform the listeners
and help them comprehend ideas and questions that have
hitherto been unknown to them without suggesting any
conclusive truths or dogma.
If this sounds simple, it requires confidence, communicative
command, relentless energy and alert concentration on
behalf of the lecturer with some minimal attention and
awareness from the audience ensuring that the effort
is mutual.
Aside from having been lectured upon constantly for
21 of the 28 years I have been alive by both inspiring
orators/mentors and neurotic propagandists, I have performed
lecture recitals, given pre-concert talks, presented
my work in workshops and given open lectures at the
Royal Northern College of Music, Cambridge University
and York University. In 2006 I will be giving my first
conference papers in Belgrade and the Goethe Institut.
My subjects have varied, ranging from my own music or
microtonal music analysis to piano technique and literature
and from Wittgenstein to popular music commercial practice.
Lecturing will no doubt be part of my professional
life in the future and I consider this to be a privilege
and a social responsibility of the highest order. Even
though all music-related subjects are of interest, I
am more familiar with certain aspects of music making
than with others and so it is advisable to be in contact
to discuss possible topics relating to specific audience
interests and needs. |
